How to Get and Keep Your First Job

Many people enter or wander aimlessly through the workforce throughout their entire careers without understanding how to find or keep the job they really want.  This book is a practical Guide to preparing you to get or keep the job you want.  It includes lessons learned by the author, friends and family. It includes things you only hear about until after your friends and family have been told about your troubles and then related their own stories. “You know, I had that problem once.”  Gee, thanks for warning me in advance! Well, the intent is to give you that warning here and now. You cannot receive such sage advice if you never ask the question. This book will try to tell you some of these things and how to deal with them before they happen. The statement “Forewarned is forearmed” is appropriate.

My initial thought regarding this book was that it would be a good idea to write something like this because I needed something like this a long time ago.  I did have my doubts about the need for this book.  At first, I ran the idea for the book by friends, family and even strangers.  The response from everyone I spoke with was overwhelmingly positive and often I was told that this book would have been a great help to those I spoke with when they first started out.  What surprised me was that many of them were in need of advice all the way back in high school. So, that is where we will begin. Some of these anecdotes have the names removed or changed but the actual events have been included in this book as illustrations.

This book is not meant to answer all questions, but to make you think about the choices that you make in advance of making them. Throughout the book I mention experiences I have had and others have had that I know which can show in real life terms how decisions may impact which road you choose. It is my full intention to follow this book up with an open forum either on the Internet or in person to discuss specific issues.  There are no guarantees that come with this book, but the intention is to make you think and to make you fear nothing in advance of making many decisions you will face in your career and life.

This book is not necessarily a roadmap to get into the best college or the best school.  Many people do not want to or need to travel the road that is traveled by others.  Your career may not require that you go to college. You will receive tips on how to get that next job or your first job irrespective of whether that job requires a college education are not.  The key is a stay on the path and understand the goals which you set for yourself.  So, while there may be some discussion or even a great deal of discussion regarding school education, there are many forms of education.

My late father was in the top one half of 1% of the salesman for Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company for most of the 38 years that he worked for them. He did not have a high school degree because he had to quit high school in order to feed his family.  Still, he became a respected person in the community and was loved by his clients and friends.  When he died at the age of 80, no one spoke about the fact that he did not have a high school education.  Those that spoke about his accomplishments knew that he had carved out of path and stayed on the path. He was a very successful person, but his focus allowed him to stay on that path.

This book will show how to get on that path and stay on that path and teach the reader how to acquire the focus and education that is needed to reach the goal of finding and keeping that first job.
